Trap shooting in college exists on many levels, from those schools which have recognized it as a sport team with scholarship support, to club teams with limited school support, to some schools where shooting is a very informal activity. Sometimes schools go from recreational/intramural to competitive depending on the year, coach, team and energy of the individuals involved. As such, this listing should serve only as a guide as the status of many programs is in flux from year to year. Those clubs with well established many year programs are identified when possible.
When people think of college sports they think of the NCAA and NAIA as sanctioning organizations. The NCAA recognizes mens rifle with 10 teams competing, mixed rifle with about 30 teams competing and womens rifle with about 15 schools involved. The NCAA is not involved in any shotgun sports.
One of the primary difficulties a shooting sports enthusiast encounters when attending college are the restrictions some colleges place on possession of target shotguns and rifles. This can be particularly troublesome if you live in the dorms. I know a number of students who would like to shoot trap in college but they have not found a suitable location to store their shotgun. The University of Montana has authorized gun storage areas at four of their residence halls. This provides a safe place for students to store their trap guns. This is a good situation for trap shooters.
The Association of College Unions International sponsors a college clay target championship each year. The link above has a listing of the results of their program for the last few years.
